On midnight, March 08, 2008 I said goodbye to relatively insecure employment. Unfortunately, there are several other previous fellow employees who preferred shaky job security to the unknown possibilities of the future. That’s quite understandable, as one offers a more definite paycheck as opposed to the other.

It got me thinking, though, about an idea I had almost a year before to create some sort of organization/conglomeration. An incorporated talent pool, if you will.

Whether it should be a legally recognized entity or merely a loose, unofficial network, would be determined later. I suppose it would operate similar to a guild, but again, I’m not sure of the legal implications, especially if dues were required. I just imagine a domain where people could go to find freelance work, be able to collaborate on projects, and teach themselves through a knowledge base of peers. I’ve seen similar groups on the web, but they focus only on one of the three pillars (Work/Collaborate/Learn) of this idea.

It would be like a forum, except much more structured.
It would be like a job search, but sociable.
It would be like a tutorial site, with more feedback.
It would be an oasis for a band of artistic nomads. (That visual scares me somewhat.)

Now the concept sounds good (or not) in theory, but who knows if it’s even viable. If so, it certainly wouldn’t launch fully developed. And in that case, how would it begin? With so many variables, I’m afraid I’ll have to pass for the moment, but if anyone else wants to fling themselves at such a concept, then be my guest. Just allow me to sign up.

And also, a graffiti motif for the website would be cool, don’t you think?

Sounds like the PixelCorps (http://www.pixelcorps.com), actually. At $150 for three months (with an initial $50 sign-up fee) it’s not cheap, but it’s not terribly expensive.

It’s got the three pillars you talk about, mostly collaborate and learn stage, but it’s massively decentralized across the world.

I had to cancel my membership due to cost factors, and a lack of time to actually do anything with it. Though I still have a bunch of tutorial videos from them.

I remember you telling me about them. The expense and decentralization seem to be its weak spots. Or maybe that’s the only way something like this could work. Perhaps structuring it like a fraternal order, with chapters in various cities could resolve both issues.

Ryan, you’ve corrupted me. I am thinking of stories in scripts, now. And not theatre, either. Oh no… Now I have to learn a whole new genre and try to break my stage direction habits. I hope you’re happy. Oh, and I have an idea for a short thing… We’ll talk.

Yay! I’m a corruptor of young girls!

I recommend celtx as a good, free scriptwriting program. It even does theater scripts, if my influence happens to wear off.

Um, I don’t think these last few comments have anything to do with the post above them. I suppose it doesn’t matter, though. There are probably rodeos in Chernobyl I should avoid trying to comprehend, as well.

Let’s just be thankful that we’re getting comments. We’ll worry about being on topic later.

Ryan, please hurry. Please… Please hurry.
And Trey, sorry to mess up your flow.

Bah! I, Victor Von Doomkopf, am left with no other choice than to write a new post… tomorrow. Yes, a shiny, new post for tomorrow! Sans ampersands, though. And absolutely nothing about Euclidean Trampolines. That topic is far too overdone. Run it’s course I do believe. And on another matter…

Ryan on March 15th, 2008 at 6:38 am #

So wait … 2:17 am on March 15 … are you counting today as tomorrow or tomorrow as tomorrow? Because if you’re counting today as tomorrow, and using a sleep period to delineate, then we’ll all be expecting a post today.

However, if you’re using tomorrow as tomorrow, that is to say March 16, then we’ll know to look for it on Sunday.

Of course, you could also be going by pure 24 hour intervals, so tomorrow wouldn’t actually occur until 2:17am on March 16 … which would mean that it would still be tomorrow, but an entirely different tomorrow than we’re expecting.

So which is it Victor? Which tomorrow will you be posting on?

Victor Von Doomkopf on March 15th, 2008 at 1:29 pm #

Bah! Do not pester, Victor Von Doomkopf, with your primitive concepts of time!

Ryan on March 15th, 2008 at 2:07 pm #

Oh come on, Von Doomkopf; we just want to know from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint!

Which point in this big ball of … stuff … will your next post appear? I’m sure we’re all wondering, especially the only other person to catch my joke.

KSloan on March 15th, 2008 at 11:06 pm #

Got away from you, that sentence. And I can already see who will need the most grammar help during rewrites. Maybe Trey will leave an Easter Egg or something.
Ah well… I am not going to sit around and wait. Life is short and I am hot… Heh.
