So, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is finally out. As a bit of a fan of the movies, how do I intend to celebrate? Well, for starters, how about going back to an old rule I used to have (before Trey broke it for me).
When I first started collecting film scores, I had just one rule: hear the music in the film before buying the soundtrack. This worked well enough and I managed to use that rule to save money whenever I found a score I wanted to get, but hadn’t yet seen the film it accompanied.
Then, in 1996, Trey convinced me to buy the score of The Phantom. It was a wonderful score, one of my favorites, and composer David Newman is certainly now one of my favorite composers. But I hadn’t yet seen the film.
It was all down hill from there. I was buying film scores on CD (and later as MP3s and AAC tracks) without even having seen the film. But now, twelve years later, I’m going back — if only for the weekend. I’ve bought the film score to Crystal Skull, courtesy of Amazon.com’s MP3 download service, but I’m not going to listen to it. Not until I see the film (which should be the 1pm matinee on Friday).
So there. You thought you had me, Trey … it’s been twelve years, but I’ve finally overcome the corrupting influence! Hahahah! Ha! Ha …
